When developing youth athletes Functional Stability is a huge part of their development, but please remember the fun in functional stability. During their coaching sessions we're going to take them through pushing, pulling, planking and bridging activities, all in the same time letting them have fun achieving some stability

For this drill you will need a stability ball and a 25+ foot rope.

Place the rope on the ground to form a circle.

In this functional stability session we are going to be doing pushing. This is what we call SUMO. Starting with a stability ball their goal is to push each other outside of the ropes. It is very important to discuss how they hold the ball.

Chest should be up against the ball with the arms wrapped around. The chest must remain against the ball at all times.

If it's not and just their hands are on the ball, they're going to be falling all over the place or worse they're going to be bumping heads with each other. I would like to see youth athletes about the same height and build to challenge each other.

Parents, if you have youth athletes of different heights and weights you can also lend a helping hand to the ball on the smaller athlete's side.

Add this FUN intro to the game called "The Sumo" (watch the video to learn the Sumo)

This sets the stage of each match

To start hold the ball against the chest and say "GO"

Both athletes should push the ball trying to move the other athlete outside of the rope. They will be recruiting all their muscles in the lower body to upper body while learning how to engage their core. This is a functional stability session that we call Sumo and it works awesome for pushing skills.
